And then to coach them as they integrate that experience, creating meaning in their lives.

Nothing in mental health is “one and done.” People are complex. And they are brave.”

Kansas City Magazine: A Look inside Ketamine-Assisted Therapy, Now Available in KC

“In one modest, sepia-toned Midtown office, a licensed social worker is trying a new weapon in the battle against anxiety, PTSD and grief—one that’s more closely associated with Jerry Garcia and Timothy Leary. Earlier this year, clinical social worker Anne Bethune launched a practice to provide psychotherapy to patients seeking therapy for mental health issues. Her practice uses ketamine, a scheduled psychedelic drug developed as an anesthetic in the sixties and later used recreationally by nineties club kids.”

On Socials

Our series on potential careers in Social Work features the work of several of our UMKC Alumni. Anne Bethune has her LCSW and in 2019 opened the first Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) practice in MO and KS. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that has been around since the 1960s and has psychedelic effects. Administering the medicine in her office, Anne explains that her clients experience an expansive, non-ordinary state of consciousness that offers an opportunity to address mental health concerns.
In Spring 2022, Anne was hired to be lead facilitator of two FDA phase 1 clinical trials to study psilocybin and 5MEO DMT in Overland Park, KS. She's also testified before elected officials in MO to advocate for expanded access to psychedelic medicine for therapeutic use. MentalHealth is just one realm (and Anne, just one example) where social workers combine their skills in empathetic care, research and advocacy to make people and communities better.
